Asthma in Seniors: Best Treatment and Management Tips

Asthma in seniors poses new challenges compared to younger patients. Symptoms are harder to control and may require longer recuperating time. Likewise, side effects from asthma medication are more observed in the elderly than younger ones.

The reason behind this is the natural aging process. As the body gets older, fighting off an infection is significantly reduced. Thus, diseases like asthma may affect the elderly more.

This article examines asthma in seniors, the symptoms, and how to manage it.

A Brief Overview of Asthma in Seniors

Asthma is present in all ages. Often, asthma in seniors or geriatric asthma is not diagnosed or undertreated for the false belief that asthma only appears in childhood.

What are the Causes of Asthma in Older Adults?

Asthma that develops in older adults is late-onset asthma. The real reason behind this is not known. However, several factors are the triggers.

Some of the triggers are:

  •  Smoking
  •  Allergies
  •  Respiratory infections and
  •  Airway irritants

Symptoms of Asthma in Adults

Asthma can inflame the airways, which may trigger excessive production of mucus. Signs and symptoms of asthma in seniors to look out for are:

  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Dry cough
  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath after exerting
  • Cold symptoms that may linger longer

Typically, asthma symptoms in seniors are the same as asthma in childhood; however, seniors may observe that their symptoms are more persistent. If not appropriately treated, the symptoms may be harder to control.

Management of Asthma in Seniors

Managing asthma in the elderly is possible through an effective asthma action plan. With the proper management, it can still put the elderly on top of the changes in asthma symptoms. The asthma action plan should include the best inhaler for the elderly and medications with fewer side effects.

Track the Symptoms

Track any changes in symptoms that you may observe. Your physician must know everything that triggered the asthma attack. It is best to record the symptoms and mention them to your physician on your next visit.

Act Quickly

Do not wait till your symptoms get worse. It is best to act quickly before the asthma attack flares up. Seniors may have a more challenging time recuperating during an asthma attack. It is wise to immediately take action on the onset of symptoms before it worsens.

Discuss with your physician who you should call or the things you should do in the case your asthma attack flares up.

Check the Inhaler

Are you using your inhaler correctly? Some elderly individuals with other health conditions like arthritis may find it hard to use the inhaler correctly. You may ask your doctor if there are other alternative devices you can use for your asthma.

Ask Your Doctor About Side Effects

All medications, including your inhaler, have side effects. Shaking and vibrations are just some of the side effects. Taking oral prednisone tablets may increase your risk of developing cataracts or osteoporosis. Not all people may experience side effects; however, these side effects are more prominent as one gets older.

Do not stop your asthma medications without the advice of your doctor. If you have worries, talk to your doctor if you are bothered that you may develop side effects.

Control Other Health Conditions

Other lung diseases can affect the presence of your asthma needs treatment, too. Some health conditions like emphysema or chronic bronchitis can also overlap with asthma symptoms. If you have these conditions, visit your doctor.

Meanwhile, other health conditions like acid reflux and sleep apnea may also affect the presence of asthma. Some medications may also increase the tightening of the airway.

Stay Physically Active

Studies show that those people who are physically active are healthier. Though asthma may slow down some of your activities, there are still some less strenuous activities and exercises that you can do.

Stop Smoking

Smoking can worsen your asthma symptoms and COPD. It would be best if you stopped smoking altogether. Giving up smoking will reduce your asthma attacks and make your asthma medications more effective.

Take Care of Your Mental Health

Anxiety, depression, and stress can worsen your asthma. A support group of family and friends may help you cope with your symptoms. Likewise, your support group should know what to do or when to call a doctor when you have an asthma flare.

Stay Healthy and Active

Asthma in the elderly can worsen as you get older; however, with the right medication, trusted support group, and proper management, elders with asthma can still live a healthier and happier life.
